Mardi Grass In the Mountains 2017

Posted on February 17, 2017

RED RIVER |MARDI GRAS IN THE MOUNTAINS | FEBRUARY 23-28
The biggest Mardi Gras celebration in NM is in Red River where the town dedicates a full week to the holiday and attracts crowds from around the country. Red River's Mardi Gras is an all-inclusive, the more-the-merrier kind of event and you'll want to bring your "krewe" with you, which means friends and family ready to have a good time.

Along with well-known Cajun Mardi Gras traditions, Red River has one unique only to this mountain town: The burning of the Loup-garu (pronounced loo-garoo). Loup-garu, the mascot of Mardi Gras in the Mountains, is paraded on foot down Main Street to his final moments. Party-goers write down their worries and as Loup-garu burns, spectators toss their troubles into the fire.

This burning of Loup-garu marks the official beginning of Mardi Gras in the Mountains. This year's theme is "Nightmare on Main Street" so start prepping your costume for the many costume balls, parades, or for wearing on the slopes which is totally acceptable during Mardi Gras week. While you worry about your costume, let Sitzmark Sports handle your ski rentals. Reserve in advance online and save 10% to use on your costume materials!
